Physiol. 2 I I (2) : 347-353. 1g66.-The patterns of instantaneous blood flow in the superior and inferior venae cavae were determined, and related to right atria1 and right ventricular pressure events in 40 dogs. The character of the normal right atria1 pressure pulse was changed by producing tricuspid regurgitation or pulmonary stenosis, and the normal sequence of right atria1 and right ventricular pressure events was altered by the experimental induction of nodal rhythm, atria1 fibrillation, or complete heart block. In all dogs, in the control state and during the various experimental conditions, there was a constant and inverse relationship between the contour of the right atria1 pressure pulse and the instantaneous vena caval flow pattern. The lack of a constant relationship between ventricular systole and the acceleration of caval blood flow during cardiac arrhythmias indicates that the phasic pattern of instantaneous thoracic vena caval flow is determined by right atria1 pressure events which predominate over any effects attributable to “ventricular systolic suction.”

Dynamics of the orifices of the venae cavae studied by cineangiocardiography.

Closure of the caval orifices of the right atrium and dynamics of the venae cavae have been studied by an analysis of high-speed cineangiocardiographic records. The influence of respirogenic and cardiogenic factors on venae cavae dynamics was demonstrated. Findings indicated that mechanical and hemodynamic factors interact in directing the atrial blood forward and in preventing its reflux into ...

4D flow MRI assessment of right atrial flow patterns in the normal heart – influence of caval vein arrangement and implications for the patent foramen ovale

AIM To investigate atrial flow patterns in the normal adult heart, to explore whether caval vein arrangement and patency of the foramen ovale (PFO) may be associated with flow pattern. MATERIALS AND METHODS Time-resolved, three-dimensional velocity encoded magnetic resonance imaging (4D flow) was employed to assess atrial flow patterns in thirteen healthy subjects (6 male, 40 years, range 25-...

The effects of venous cannulation technique and cardioplegia type on plasma potassium concentration and arterial blood pressure during cardiopulmonary bypass.

The cannulation method and cardioplegia solution used during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may both influence plasma potassium concentrations ([K+]) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). Bi-caval or right atrial cannulation methods are routinely used in conjunction with crystalloid or blood cardioplegia. We investigated the influence of cannulation method and cardioplegia solutions on plasma [...

Mechanism of morphine-induced shifts in blood volume between extracorporeal reservoir and the systemic circulation of the dog under conditions of constant blood flow and vena caval pressures.

The mechanism of a morphine-induced shift in blood volume between an extracorporeal reservoir and the systemic circulation of a dog under conditions of constant blood flow and vena caval pressures was investigated in 10 anesthetized dogs with the aid of right heart bypass. All blood returning to the heart was removed from the right atrial appendage and, after passing through a Starling resistor...
